About Legends of Runeterra
Legends of Runeterra is a card game developed by Riot Games for both mobile and PC.
Set in the same world as League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra further expands the storylines of the game while also introducing players to a strategy card game where strategic planning, skill, cleverness, and adaptability will lead to victory.
In this game, every move you make matters so I tend to be careful with the way I play with my cards. Players get to choose a deck of cards depending on their play style and their chosen region.
Players can summon units, champions, cast spells, and block attacks, and the player that destroys the enemy Nexus first through sheer damage from units or casting a spell that deals the final blow wins the game.
How and Where to Download
To download Legends of Runeterra, you will have to sign up for a Riot account first on their official website. I already have my Riot account beforehand so I immediately went to download the game by clicking on Play Now on the website.
Download and install the app first and then log in using your Riot account login details.
How to Purchase Coins
Coins are the premium in-game currency used within Legends of Runeterra. They are commonly used to purchase cosmetic items such as boards, emotes, guardians, and card backs. Coins are also used in the game to unlock Card Style.
To purchase coins, I can either use my PayPal account or my credit or debit card to buy them online. I’ve also discovered that pricing differs from one country to another so what may be cheap for some can be expensive for others.
Additionally, the PC version of the game also has more bundled options to choose from and have more payment options than the mobile version.
I can also purchase coins directly from the in-game store. I simply select the item that I want to buy and if I still need to purchase coins, the store immediately sends me to the page where I can buy some for my account. Once I have the coins, I can go back to the item and purchase it.
Get Coins for Free
From what I know, Coins in Legends of Runeterra can only be acquired through purchasing them with real money. There is no way to earn free coins in this game however, I have discovered a few things that will help you get enough funds to purchase coins for the game.
One good way to earn funds is to check out streamers and content creators of the game. They are the ones that often offer giveaways and rewards for loyal viewers of their stream. There are also YouTube channels that do giveaways once they reach a certain number of subscribers on their page so keep an eye out for those.
You may also check out official live stream events from Riot especially when it comes to Legends of Runeterra. I’ve noticed that Riot’s other games constantly provide a lot of freebies and codes during their official stream so watch out for that when Legends of Runeterra streams go live.
Tips to Play Legends of Runeterra
Those who have experience with turn-based strategy card games will need less time to fully understand the mechanics of Legends of Runeterra.
For someone like me who is still new to the genre, there are times when I had to check out all the cards and expose myself to the mechanics of the game. It might be too complicated for some but in general, the game is very easy to pick up and understand.
To learn more about the game, here are some tips that I can share with you on how to play the game properly, especially if you are still new to this genre.
Play the Tutorial
For beginners like me who have little to no experience playing online card games, the tutorial is the best place to learn the basics of the game. The tutorial in Legends of Runeterra is broken down into four major parts.
Each part has a match that will test how you understood the game and will teach you how to play the game. You won’t be dropped immediately into the game and play with other players. I still had to contend with playing against AI after the tutorial just to fine-tune my skills in playing this game.
One thing I noticed is that there is no need to understand the champions in the game during this time, you should be focusing on the general aspects of the game such as how each card is dealt with and the objectives of the game to win.
Understanding Each Round
In Legends of Runeterra, each round will provide you the chance to summon units, cast spells, and even counter the damage or spells cast by your opponent. Each round in the game plays differently as both players can sling spells at each other as long as there is still mana left.
This means that players can counter their opponent’s moves even if it is not their turn yet.
This makes for exciting gameplay as it allows a proactive approach to winning the game instead of watching all of my summonses blow up right in front of my face and be able to do nothing about it until my turn.
Expeditions are a great source of acquiring new sets of cards and other rewards in Legends of Runeterra. In Expeditions, I get to play with decks that have random cards in them and play with whatever card I’m dealt with.
The random set of cards have truly tested my mettle in this game and it will also test yours. This is the true height of your understanding of the game.
The more you play Expeditions, the more you earn rewards. However, the game does limit how many times you can play Expeditions so you can’t quickly grow all of your card collections.
Building Your Deck
Building your deck can be quite tricky in Legends of Runeterra. Some factions or regions offer some of the most powerful synergies while others seem to be very disjointed. However, I have come to appreciate the game’s nature of building your deck.
While the pre-constructed deck is a good place to start, I have tried and tested a few things by adding other cards and see how well it goes with the rest of the deck.
I suggest that you try to play your constructed deck against an AI opponent and see how many combos you can pull with this current deck of cards.
Learn the Keywords
One essential aspect in playing Legends of Runeterra apart from learning the champions, their skills, units to summon, as well as spells, are keywords. Keywords are the game’s way of telling you the ability of the card that you want to play.
Certain keywords can be game-changing if you play them correctly. Some of the popular keywords include Barrier which allows you to block an attack, while Silence removes all the effects of a certain skill or spell until its duration ends.
By learning keywords, I get to plan and prepare how I play the game on my next turn. While there are a lot of keywords to learn, they are easily viewed by right-clicking on the keywords when checking out the card.
The Legends of Runeterra guide mentioned above is a great tool to understand the game and learn its basic mechanics. There is still a lot more to do with the game than just building your deck of cards that suit your play style or throw spells at each other during battle.
There are also a couple of ways to get free coins as well, that can help you to enjoy the gaming experience even more, once you have your strategy down.
